Your Storm Might Be Someone Else’s Rainbow

One night when driving home from work, I saw a beautiful rainbow northeast of me. As I admired its beauty, thoughts of God’s promises and faithfulness to us mentioned in Genesis flooded my mind.

But then I noticed the storm behind it. It was producing a heavy amount of rain and lightning. It was very dark and looked like a dangerous storm. I began praying for those who were in its path, concerned for people I did not know, nor ever would, asking God to protect them and provide for their needs.

Then the Lord spoke to my heart. “Are you willing to let the storms in your life become someone else’s rainbow?” I meditated on that the rest of the way home. How many times when I am going through something, do my eyes get fixed on me? This is just too painful… why is this happening to me… where is God in all of this?

If only I could remember in those times that God is right there, in me, as I am to be His dwelling place. He is going through it with me. Can I get past my pain and let God use the situation that the enemy or life has put in my path to do an eternal work in me? Can I get past myself, allowing God to show Himself faithful to others by watching me go through this storm?

Then He reminded me how sometimes I try to run away from my problems and the storms that come my way, even though I know that in the storm is where His faithfulness comes shining through. Simply stated, you and I have to face the storm to see the rainbow ourselves!

Those are things that I now think about when I am going through trials. While at times I still focus on me, I have learned that it is a waste of time and energy searching for answers that aren’t here to find.

While God is good and wants the best for me, the world is in a fallen state due to sin. Since I am in this world, I will experience trials, some of my own doing and others that may seem unfair. But God can turn it around, even going so far as making it a blessing in some way, for me and those around me.

Even Christ was unjustly tortured and put to death as a criminal (talk about a major storm in life), but God took an unjust act and used it to justify you and me! (Now that is a fabulous rainbow for all of us from His storm!)

Won’t you pray with me: Father, please, may the storms in my life become someone else’s rainbow, so they can see your faithfulness and love for them!

How to Live Life to the Fullest

I can’t think of a way to ease into this, so I am going to just dig right in.

If we will admit it, even as Christians, most of us look at death as something morbid. We don’t like to talk about it, read about it, or even think about it. And if you are reaching for your keyboard to move on to something else, there is a good chance you are one of those people. But please stay with me for a little bit longer. (After all, the title is about living life to the fullest.)

Having someone close to us die, causes us to think and live differently. We realize how fragile life is, and we want to make the most of it. At least for a while.

But then busyness sets in, and most of us eventually find ourselves right back in the ho-hum daily grind of life that we are used to. (Just look at how our quickly our nation swung back into that after 9-11.)

Our culture has done a good job of keeping death away from us in a way that makes us not fully realize it is part of life. As Ray Edwards put it, “As a society, we have managed to sanitize death. To hide it and make sure it happens in hospital rooms. Then the body is covered with a sheet, and furtively moved to the basement. Gone are the days when we faced death fully, with eyes wide open.”

When we are fully aware that we will all die and are not afraid to read about it, talk about it, even meditate on it, it awakens us to live a fuller life, which brings more peace, more contentment and more joy.

I believe that is because it is allowing the Holy Spirit to shed His light into a dark closet of our hearts that we didn’t want opened. And now the light is flooding in and it becomes a blessing in our lives because of the tormenting fear that has been removed and the freedom it brings.

I was recently made aware of the Latin phrase “memento mori.” It means, “Remember you will die.” Ray had that tattooed on his forearm as a reminder to live life in the now, because that is all we have. We don’t have yesterday, and we don’t have tomorrow. We don’t even have five minutes from now. We each have the exact moment we are in. (Ray also is living with Parkinson’s and he refuses to just give in, missing out on what life still has to offer. He is living life to the fullest as much as possible as his disease progresses and does in a month more than most of us will do in a year.)

Death can either be something we try to avoid that the enemy can use in our lives, or it can be what God says it is, a transfer to a different home, and be a tool the Holy Spirit can use to learn how to live in His presence now, instead of waiting for that transfer.

I am not going for a tattoo as a reminder, but I have written myself a note and placed it where I will see it every night before heading to bed that says, “Did I live today fully alive and to its fullest potential?”  This is in hopes that during the day as I make choices for my time, and even sitting alone with my thoughts, that I will do so, knowing I want to be able to answer this question with a resounding “Yes, I did!” at the end of every day.

I know that will look differently for each of us, and even change for each of us in the different seasons of life. But whatever season you and I are in, even if it is a season of deep grief, I pray we will be able to do so in a way that gives life.

How about you? What are you doing to remind yourself that we all will die, and therefore each day, each moment, to LIVE? I would love to hear from you in the comments below.

5 of My Favorite Faith-Inspiring Quotes

Scripture. There’s nothing as life-giving as God’s Word. Recently I heard about “The Hand” illustration to making Scripture an everyday part of one’s life.

If you are like me and haven’t heard of “The Hand,” the premise is that each of these 5 practices gives you a strong “grip” on the Word of God, as if each of these represent one of your fingers (and thumb, of course):

1. Hearing
2. Reading
3. Studying
4. Memorizing
5. Meditating

While I love to share Scripture the most, I’ve also been encouraged and inspired by several quotes I’ve read in books or heard in sermons throughout the years.

These don’t take the place of Scripture (obviously!) but these quotes have given me perspective, hope, and encouragement in my day-to-day life, and I hope they do the same for you wherever you are reading this from.

The little things are the big things. Unknown. (I have seen many variations of this quote.)

Faith and fear both demand you believe in something you cannot see. You choose! Bob Proctor

Rules without relationship leads to rebellion. Josh McDowell

I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know who holds tomorrow. Unknown. (Joyce Meyer has a variation of this.)

We want clarity before we take action. But clarity only comes because we take action. Kary Oberbrunner (Another one of his quotes I greatly appreciate is: Clarity attracts, confusion repels.)

If you’re looking for some other great reads, don’t forget to check out my previous article: 3 of My Favorite Books – Have You Read Any of These?
