Grieving Parents in the Bible: Finding Comfort, Hope, and Faith

Banner with misty gray mountains and muted sky, featuring the title Grieving Parents in the Bible: Finding Comfort, Hope, and Faith. GPS Hope

Walking Through the Valley of Child Loss with God

Blurred Bible on wooden surface with text: “God Himself is with us, just as He was with the very first grieving parents in the Bible.” GPS Hope - Grieving Parents Sharing HOPEIf you have ever felt alone in the pain of losing your child, I want you to know that you are not walking this road by yourself. Together, as grieving parents, we walk through this valley with the God who promises to be our Shepherd. God Himself is with us, just as He was with the very first grieving parents in the Bible.

A few years ago, I began to look more closely at the parents in the Bible who lost a child. Reading their stories now, as a mom who has walked through this devastation myself, gave me a whole new perspective. Their pain and their faith speak powerful truths that still meet us in our own grief.

Biblical Parents Who Experienced the Death of a Child

Two elderly people on a white bench under golden autumn leaves with quote: “The pain and grief of parents in the Bible who lost a child speak powerful truths that still meet us in our own grief today.” GPS Hope - Grieving Parents Sharing HOPEWhen Adam and Eve buried their son, Abel, after he was murdered by his own brother, I don’t think they even understood the full reality of death until they saw Abel’s lifeless body. They were the first to experience the heartbreak of child loss, and they weren’t the last. Scripture is filled with stories of parents who endured the death of a child, and their experiences hold encouragement for us today.

Take King David for example. He pleaded and fasted for God to heal his sick infant son, but the answer was “no.” Many of us know what that feels like. Yet even in his grief, David expressed faith that one day he would see his son again. That assurance of reunion is something we can hold on to as well. Grieving Parents in the Bible like David remind us that even in loss, faith can anchor us.

Or consider Job. He didn’t just lose one child; he lost all of them. His anguish was deep, and his questions were raw. Yet Job held on to his faith in God. His story reminds us that our tears and questions are not a weakness. They are part of honestly walking with God through our suffering.

There is also the Shunammite woman, who I first overlooked, because her son was raised back to life. But before that miracle, she faced the sudden death of her young boy. In her desperation, she clung to God’s prophet and refused to let go until she saw Him move. Her persistence reminds us that God welcomes our raw cries and desperate clinging when grief overwhelms us.

God’s Presence, Mercy, and Hope Amidst Grief

Hands holding open a Bible on a church pew with quote: “show us that while the sorrow is deep and lasting, God's presence, mercy and hope are deeper still.” GPS Hope

These stories, as well as reading about others in the Scriptures who have lost a child, reveal something important: God does not turn away from grieving parents. He meets us in our pain. The Grieving Parents in the Bible show us that while the sorrow is deep and lasting, God’s presence, mercy and hope are deeper still.

One of the most profound truths I have learned is that God’s goodness is not transactional. It is not about Him shielding us from pain in exchange for our prayers or good behavior. Instead, His goodness is found in His presence with us, in His comfort, peace, and the hope of eternity. His mercy carries us, even when life doesn’t look the way we thought it would or should.

Isaiah 61 became my life passage before I knew God would shift me from international children’s ministry to walking with grieving parents. It promises beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, comfort for the brokenhearted and freedom for those who are locked in a place that holds them captive. That is what He is doing in me and through me, and I fully believe it is what He wants to do for every parent walking this road of deep earthly loss.

Finding Encouragement Through The Bible’s Grieving Parents

Sunlit forest path with rays breaking through dark, paired with message of God’s presence . GPS HopeWe can see in the stories of grieving parents in the Bible that God’s mercy and goodness carried them through, and He will do the same for us. His Spirit strengthens us to not only survive, but to one day share hope with others walking this same painful journey.

These shattered parents, and others, became the foundation for my new book, The Bible’s Grieving Parents: Finding Comfort, Hope and Faith from Their Stories. You can receive the same encouragement I discovered, by looking at these parents through the lens of losing a child from this earth. Their journeys remind us that God is not absent in our darkest valley. He is the same God who met them in their grief, and He is here for us today, to meet us in ours.

So, if you have been struggling with questions like “Where is God in this pain?” or “How do I keep living with a broken heart?” I wrote this book for you. My prayer is that these biblical stories will remind you that you are not alone, and that God’s goodness and mercy are still at work in your life.

Have you ever taken the time to look at parents in the Bible who have lost a child as a powerful resource that speaks directly to the heart of  grieving parents walking through child loss today?

In this episode, Laura takes us on a short journey of just a few parents in the Bible who experienced the death of a child. From Adam and Eve’s loss of Abel, to King David’s grief over his infant son, to Job’s unimaginable pain of losing all his children, these ancient stories have deep truths for those of us who have lost a child, as well as reminding us that we are not alone in our grief.

Laura also takes a deeper look at God’s goodness and mercy, even within the intense pain of child loss, and why our faith must rest on who God is rather than what we think He should (or shouldn’t) do.

This conversation will reassure you that you’re not alone, and that there is no pressure or timetable when it comes to what you keep or release. Your child’s life is worth remembering in the way that brings you comfort and peace.

Sacred Reminders | GPS Hope: Grieving Parents Sharing Hope

Golden wheat field glowing at sunset, symbolizing Sacred Reminders of child loss, memory, and enduring love. GPS Hope – Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.Some blog posts are easy to write, and others bring tears before my fingers even touch the keyboard. This one is the latter. It’s tender and raw, but also filled with God’s kindness, so I want to invite you into the journey with me as I share about the sacred reminders that carry love, loss, and legacy in ways words often cannot.

Life in the Hope Mobile

An elderly person holding a framed photo of two children, showing Sacred Reminders of love, life, and the lasting bond after child loss. GPS Hope – Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.In 2018, Dave and I bought a motor home that we lovingly call the Hope Mobile. For five years we traveled full-time across the nation for GPS Hope, coming alongside grieving parents at retreats, support groups, and personal visits. Eventually, we needed to pause that season to be closer to our kids and grandkids here in Wisconsin, but the Hope Mobile still carries its own stories. Even as I write this, walnuts are falling on its roof, squirrels are playing tag in the trees above, and Savanah the cat is on full alert at the window.

When we made the big transition to motor home life, there were so many little miracles. Our son bought our house, a professional rummage seller did the entire work of the giant rummage sale without charging us, and we were even allowed to leave some things stored in the basement. Now, as my son is preparing to sell that house, I’m faced with a new reality: deciding what to do with all the things tucked away down there.

And wow, what a lifetime of “things” they are; books from my childhood, keepsakes from raising our kids, treasures from my many trips to Africa, and even special items that once belonged to Becca. Each one holds a story, a memory, a connection.

My Dad’s Legacy

Two butterflies in flight above green foliage and white flowers, representing Sacred Reminders that love and legacy remain beyond the objects left behind. GPS Hope – Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.

But what I want to share with you right now are some of the hardest boxes of all, which are filled with my dad’s legacy.

Back in the 70s, my dad traveled the nation as “Uncle Bob,” sharing the Gospel in a most unusual way, through magic tricks, balloon animals, and a life-sized ventriloquist dummy named Timothy. Long before object lessons were popular, my dad was captivating kids and adults with unforgettable truths wrapped in a little bit of wonder.

About fifteen years ago, he passed his props and Timothy on to me. My life had been children’s ministry, too, and we both thought I could carry on the tradition. But then Becca died, and my ministry shifted. The boxes stayed packed. And every time I thought about parting with them, it felt like I’d be parting with him.

It was a huge reminder of how it is even more difficult for us as pareavors. Whether it’s our child’s clothes, a worn-out blanket, or a toothbrush at the sink, these aren’t just “things.” They are sacred reminders of the love and the life that we don’t want to forget. Letting them go feels like letting go of the person themselves.

God’s Gentle Answer in Releasing Sacred Reminders

A hand gently outstretched in a flowered field at sunset, capturing Sacred Reminders of peace, release, and carrying forward precious memories. GPS Hope – Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.For years, I’ve held onto my dad’s magic. But now I am forced to pray about what to do because of my son preparing to sell the house. How do you sell a bunch of magic tricks? Would anyone even buy them? I did some research, and sent out a few emails for some suggestions.

And then, in one of those beautiful, unmistakable God-moments, I got an email back from someone I had reached out to. He buys entire magic “estates”! Not only that, he has a museum of ventriloquist figures and told me that Timothy could have a home in his magic museum, with a story about my dad!

I was not only in awe, but tears ran easily down my face. What felt impossible for me, God answered in a way that honored both my dad’s memory and the heart behind his ministry.

A dimly lit window with a heart-shaped wreath, reflecting Sacred Reminders that love for a child never leaves but lives on in the heart. GPS Hope – Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.Here’s what I have been reminded of once again; letting go doesn’t mean forgetting. The love and the legacy remain, even when the “stuff” does not. And when the time is right, God will give us peace about what to keep, what to release, and how to carry the memories forward.

So, if you find yourself standing in front of a closet or a box of memories, wondering what to do, don’t let others pressuzre you. Bring it to God. Trust His timing. Some things may stay, some things may go, and some things may wait for years. And that’s okay.

Because in the end, it’s not the objects that carry the love. It is your heart. The love itself for your child never leaves.

As grieving parents, we often find ourselves, understandably, holding tightly to the belongings of our child who has died. A favorite shirt, a treasured toy, a blanket, even something as simple as a toothbrush. These are not just objects. They are sacred reminders of the bond we still have with our child.

In this episode of Grieving Parents Sharing Hope, Laura opens her heart about facing this very struggle herself. While sorting through family belongings, she was reminded how difficult it is to decide what to keep and what to release. Through her personal story of a current situation she finds herself in, along with the experiences of other bereaved parents, she shares gentle encouragement that:

  • Keeping or letting go is not about being “stuck” in grief. It’s about love.
  • It’s okay to hold onto items for as long as you need.
  • God will give you peace and direction in His timing.
  • The bond with your child remains, no matter what happens with their belongings.

This conversation will reassure you that you’re not alone, and that there is no pressure or timetable when it comes to what you keep or release. Your child’s life is worth remembering in the way that brings you comfort and peace.

Rebuilding Your Life After Child Loss: How Grief Affects Your Mind

An image of a dark, foggy road leading into a forest, symbolizing the heavy journey of grief. Overlaid text reads: “Rebuilding Your Life After Child Loss: How Grief Affects Your Mind.” The first part of the title is in white, while “How Grief Affects Your Mind” is highlighted in orange. A visual reminder of the difficult mental struggles grieving parents face while seeking healing and hope. GPS Hope - Grieving Parents Sharing HOPE.If you are reading this, it may be because somewhere deep inside your pain, there’s still a tiny flicker of hope. It may feel fragile, almost hidden, but it’s there. And I want to encourage you that it can grow into something steady and life-giving — a first step toward rebuilding your life after child loss.

When Grief Affects the Mind

Sunlight shining through trees onto a forest floor with an inspirational quote overlay. One of the hardest parts of grief after losing a child is what it does to our minds. The fog, the forgetfulness, the inability to concentrate; it can feel overwhelming and even frightening. One day I drove home from the grocery store without my groceries! I remember one time pulling over in the car because I could not remember why I was driving or where I was going, and checking to see if there was something on my phone calendar to tell me. (Thankfully, there was.)

For a long time, I wondered if something was seriously wrong with me. Was I developing early Alzheimer’s? But I eventually learned this is a normal part of deep grief. Studies have shown that grief literally affects the brain. The mental and emotional energy it takes just to survive each day leaves us disoriented and forgetful.

Comforting embrace in a cemetery, symbolizing support in griefIf this is you right now, please hear me: you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone. This is part of the grieving process. And even though those first couple of years can feel brutal, it does get better. The breakdowns become less frequent, and the fog doesn’t last as long.

Of course, it doesn’t help when others don’t understand. People say things like, “I know how you feel,” or ask, “How are you?”, expecting a quick “fine,” while inside you are torn apart. Family events can be overwhelming, and triggers can come from the smallest things. But you’re not failing. You are grieving.

The Difference Between Grief and Self-Pity

Empty swing set with two swings hanging still in a quiet park with bare trees. Here’s something important I had to learn: there is a difference between grief and self-pity. Grief is an appropriate response to the unthinkable loss of a child. But there comes a point where we can choose not to stay stuck in despair — and begin rebuilding your life after child loss with hope.

So how do we begin to move forward?

Stay connected to others who get it. Surround yourself with pareavors who are further down the road and can walk with you toward hope.
Let your mind be renewed. What you focus on will grow. If you keep focusing only on the pain, it will consume you. But choosing, even little by little, to focus on truth can help shift your perspective.

Choosing a Path Toward Healing and Hope

Sunset over mountains with grief support quote from gpshope.org.One of the truths that set me free was realizing I wasn’t moving further away from my daughter, Becca, as the years went by. Each day I live on this earth actually brings me closer to the day I will see her again. I am not getting further away from her; I am getting closer and closer to her. That perspective helped to shift me out of my self-pity, and still does.

The journey of rebuilding your life after child loss isn’t about “getting over it” or erasing your child’s memory. It’s about finding a way to live again, not in spite of your child’s death, but because of his or her life, and the depth of love you will always carry for them.
