Episode 34: Finding Peace During the Holidays

Advent is a time of waiting. Many people are waiting for Christmas with joyful anticipation, mixed with frazzled busyness. But for many of us who have faced the death of our child, it is a time of waiting for the season to just… be…over.

God knew from the very beginning of time that we would struggle with feeling so hopeless in our grief, and He did something about it. He sent His own Son to become one of us here on earth, knowing the purpose of His birth was to die for all of us; not just so we could have an abundant life after this earth, but so that we could also experience things like peace, while here on this earth facing the often brutal attacks of the enemy.

Jesus isn’t just our Savior, He isn’t just our King, He is also our shepherd, to guide us into a place of peace; a peace that doesn’t make any sense after the death of our child. But their death isn’t the end, it is not the final word.

When the angels announced the earthly entrance of Jesus as a little baby, they proclaimed, “Peace on earth!” Peace came as a gift in a manger. Peace is God’s plan for us and it is being extended to each one of us. He did His part. Our part is to let go of what we are carrying that keeps us from accepting His gift of peace.

If you need peace this holiday season, Laura is here to assure you that you can have it, even in the midst of the pain of your deep grief.

Episode 33: Finding Hope During the Holidays

The end-of-the-year holidays can be brutal for those who have lost a child, especially those first few years. It can feel like a continual slap-in-the-face reminder of who is not here with us.

Even if we have other children or grandchildren, a loving spouse, a great job or are part of a fulfilling ministry, it feels almost impossible to want to be part of the festivities. It just isn’t in us.

Join Laura for the next few weeks leading into Christmas, as she gives hope, infuses peace, reminds us how powerful God’s love is, and even tackles the subject of joy.

The subject for this episode is hope, as she shares how Christmas is the perfect time of year to allow God to stir this up in us, even within the deep grief and loss of our children.

Why Bother Praying Any More? (Part 2)

“Why bother praying if God is just going to do whatever He wants?”

This is one of the greatest struggles I hear about in conversations with other bereaved parents. We pray for protection for our children, or pray for a healing, and when we don’t see God answer those prayers, it is frustrating (or we are outright angry) as it makes no sense, especially when we did everything we were supposed to do on our end.

In the previous blog, I shared part of an email from a hurting, grieving parent, who was questioning this very thing. And after admitting that I have struggled with it as well, I began to share my thoughts and heart on this issue.

To read part one, before continuing with part two, click here, which I highly recommend, as it gives four different perspectives on why we might want to keep praying.

As I was thinking and praying (yes, talking to God about this), I believe the Lord gave me an illustration that made so much sense to me. I have since shared it with dozens of other bereaved parents, and it seems to make sense to them as well.

As a king rules his land, his subjects will come to him to petition him for things. He can either say yes, or no, based on his view of the big picture of the entire kingdom.

The subject will be happy with his answer if he gets what he is asking for. But he could be pretty upset with the king if his request is denied. He may even be angry and slander the king to the other subjects, deciding he isn’t a very good king at all, for not doing what he wanted or needed, forgetting that the king is looking from a completely different viewpoint.

So, the subject may not always get his request granted, but at least he came before the throne for the King to hear his case. But if that subject doesn’t bother coming to the king with his need, the king has no obligation whatsoever to move on his behalf.

And that, is why we need to keep praying.

I believe this is what “request” prayers are like. I am petitioning the King for what I think I need, or even something I desperately want. He answers according to the big picture of eternity that I cannot see, based on information I don’t know. Sometimes my request is granted, and sometimes it is not, which can make me hurt, angry, and believing He isn’t a good King (or a loving Father). But I still need to continue going to Him with my requests and knock on the door to see if it opens for me.

I understand the struggle, and yes, I still sometimes wonder in my thoughts why I should bother asking God for something, especially when I feel like yet another prayer hasn’t been answered in the way I thought it would (or should) be answered.

And when I find that happening, I am learning to ask God what it is about Him that I don’t understand yet, because when I try to lean on my own understanding, I can get all messed up. So, I need to see things from His perspective. And if I don’t get an answer to that? Then I have decided to continue to believe that He sees what I cannot see, and knows what I do not know, and I will continue to share my heart with Him, trusting that someday, it will all make sense.

I think the bottom line is that we try to make sense of God with our finite brains and limitations, but that is just plain impossible. We want God to answer to us, which is just as futile as a teenager arguing with his parents, wanting them to answer to him. How can they? How can they explain that they see what their teenager cannot see, and knows what their teenager doesn’t know, in a way that makes that teen satisfied with the answer? And how can God possibly explain to us through His lens of eternity?

My husband, Dave, got a four-year degree in Computer Science. (It was so long ago that he even had to do a computer punch card program for one of his classes. Yikes!). His entire 30-year career was with programming computers, fixing computer programs and crashes, or internationally managing others who were doing it. There are times I ask Dave (who is my personal geek squad) to do something for me, and he has to tell me it can’t be done. I always want him to explain why, because it seems like he should be able to find a way, since he is a computer programmer by profession.

He often sighs, knowing that at some point I will get totally lost and not understand what he is trying to explain to me. (Interpretation: I get really frustrated, because it still doesn’t make any sense to me…)

I’m pretty sure the same thing would happen if I were to ask a nuclear scientist a question on how something worked, because it is beyond what my mind would be able to follow or comprehend.

God is greater than any computer techy or nuclear scientist, so what makes me think I would be able to follow or comprehend God’s explanation, either?

We often try to bring God down to our level because we want to understand His actions – why He does what He does. That is like the Israelites. They knew the acts of God, which left them always grumbling and complaining, but Moses knew His ways (Psalm 103:7). There is a big difference between knowing the actions of God and knowing His heart. When we go beyond knowing the acts of God and press in to knowing His ways (in other words, His heart), we can still trust that He is good and He is faithful, even in the deepest and darkest pain we can face on this earth.

And we can continue to come to Him with our requests, knowing that He is God and we are not. Someday this will all be behind us, and we will understand as we see through the same lens of eternity that our children now have.

Are you struggling to move forward in your life because of the painful things that have happened? Are you confused at God’s vision for your life? Do you need a deeper revelation of who God is in you?

Episode 32: Why Should I Go to a Retreat for Bereaved Parents?

It took podcast host, Laura Diehl, almost four years after her daughter died to go to a conference for bereaved moms because she didn’t think it would help her at all to be around a bunch of others who were a mess like she was. But when she finally went, Laura discovered it was just the opposite; it was wonderful and healing to be with others who understood, and she got to talk about Becca with others who wanted to hear about her daughter.

This episode is a discussion that took place in Texas with five “cabin mates” at a recent weekend retreat. Only two of them already knew each other. These moms ranged from losing their child twelve years ago to as recent as two months! Some have been to conferences and retreats before, and for some it was their first time.

You will enjoy their almost instant camaraderie as they share some nuggets they are taking home with them after spending the weekend together. And you might be really surprised at what Melissa has to say, who just lost her son, Cody, two months ago.

Moms from left to right: Patti – Megan’s mom, Sherry – Taylor’s mom, Melissa – Cody’s mom, Judy – Ben’s mom, and your’s truly – Becca’s mom.

Four Tips to Traveling Easy, Quick and Light

If there’s one thing that comes with the territory of ministry, it’s travel! And being in international children’s ministry for years meant I got pretty good at it.

And even though we now live in a house on wheels, there are still times we need to pack a suitcase to travel, leaving the Hope Mobile parked while we are gone.

As we get closer to travel season, I thought it would be fun to share some of our best practices when it comes to planning for travel.

Chances are you and your family are planning some vacation or holiday trips in the next few weeks. Whether you’re going on a three-day business trip or preparing for a two-week vacation, here are some guidelines for maximizing suitcase space, minimizing your load and cutting down on wrinkles!

Tip #1: Invest in A Good Carry-On
If you are flying, make sure you know the size limit, both for the overhead compartment and under your seat. Most airlines allow two carry-ons but check your specific flight to make sure. (Ladies, the bag that goes under my seat is where I also stash my purse, because it is considered a third carry-on which is definitely not allowed.)

On my second trip to Nigeria, I had the same red carry-on that I had placed under my feet for several international trips, along with an overhead bag that was quite full. For whatever reason, I was stopped at the door of the plane where I was told my red bag was too big for under the seat and I would have to check it plane side. I had all of my notes for teaching that I had to finish and study, plus personal items to refresh myself during the long travel and some healthier snack items.

I asked if I would get it back in Atlanta before crossing the ocean and was told no, it would have to go in the cargo all the way to Nigeria. It didn’t matter that I let them know I have put it under the seat in several previous flights. I was in tears because I was counting on my long flight to finish preparing, and I begged them to let me at least take it on and show them it fits. They absolutely refused but offered me two plastic Delta bags to dump everything into so that I could take the contents with me.

WHAT???? So instead of my small red bag on wheels with everything packed in neatly, I had two plastic bags with everything randomly dumped into them to try and fit under my seat, while my empty red bag got checked in plane-side to go with the cargo!

So, once again, if you are flying, do your best to make sure you have a carry-on that won’t give you any problems.

Tip #2: Create a Separate Toiletry “Kit”

This comes in very handy and should consist of a TSA regulation clear bag that has travel-size or hotel sample items. I don’t have to think about what I need, because it is already in my kit, ready to grab for any trip. When I get home, I make sure it is resupplied for the next time I need it.

Note: I always toss this in my carry-on, even if I have a large suitcase that I am checking through with a full-size bottle of shampoo, etc. Why? Because I got stuck in a Boston airport overnight with nothing to freshen myself, including things like a travel toothbrush and toothpaste or deodorant. I won’t let that happen again! (Make sure your toiletry kit is in front or on top of your carry-on, so you can easily get to it for putting it in the bin going through security.)

Tip #3: Count (and Pack) Socks and Undergarments First!
I will let you decide why this is a good tip…

Tip #4: Think “Tetris”
Don’t just throw everything in the suitcase as you grab it. Lay it on the bed next to your suitcase and fold it neatly or roll up each item. Then when you have everything, pretend you are building a puzzle.

Rolled up socks can be stuffed inside shoes (placed inside plastic shopping bags to keep your clothes clean). Small items like underwear or rolled up T-shirts or thin pajama pants can easily fit on the bottom between those annoying bars that hold the pull handle. This leaves you with a much flatter surface for packing some of the bigger or bulkier items. Be sure to place the items you want to stay as wrinkle-free as possible on the top.

You might be surprised at how much room you still have, when packing this way. You can either fill the space with adding more “just in case” items or use the space to bring home more souvenirs than you had planned!

Checked baggage fees, small overhead compartments, and long waits at baggage claim are just a few reasons it pays to pack light, whenever possible.

My hope is that these tips give you some insight into your own journey when it comes to travel!

Question: Are you traveling anywhere this upcoming season? I’d love to hear where you’re going and what you do to keep travel manageable. Leave a comment or write me back, I’d love to hear from you!
